Over-thinking...

Last night I realized that...

Over-thinking ruins you.
Ruins the situation, twist things around,
makes you worry and just makes everything
much worse than it actually is.

Open Letter: Dear Shane Nameless and Faceless

It's odd, six years have passed and yet I haven't had a chance to let this go. What happened back that December afternoon has completely altered my life, whether for better or worse I haven't figured out. I do know that you've haunted me these past years, kept me in fear without even being around. I'll have those scars you gave me, but long for them to disappear; unfortunately the memories haven't. Part of me wishes there had been a chance for closure, some way for me to tell you what a moron you were, to find out what the hell you were thinking. But that is literally impossible. There are still so many things left unsaid that will never be heard, so many questions that don't have a chance to be asked. So instead of holding them in for another six years, maybe I'll get them off my chest.

I woke up today tired of the thought of you, which is odd but maybe it's because you came up in a conversation that I was having with Marco (Polo). [which was kinda awkward] But either way, I have done lot of changing because of you, inside and out. I have only one memory of you, standing in that hallway. The last time I ever saw you. The fear in my stomach, the tears I cried, the confusion. I've thought of a million different ways that day could have turned out since then. You were stupid, foolish, stubborn. More than anything I'd like to know why? Why did you do it? Were you even thinking about anyone other than yourself? Are you happy with what you've become? You have no idea the way people looked at me afterwards, and I'm sure you couldn't care less. There are long term consequences to things like this, and I will never be able to be the same person I once was. I'm afraid of so mach because of you. I'm haunted because of you. I don't trust like I used to.

But I'm done. Finally, six years later, I've had enough of this. I refuse to let this shape the rest of my future. You aren't worth it and I'm stronger than that. No one can look at me anymore and see it written on my face like they could before. So from now on I will no longer think of you; you will remain nameless and faceless. What happened back then between us will be forgotten. You will be forgotten.

Sincerely,
Amanda

MEMO TO MEN: The vulnerability lesson

TO: Men all over the planet
FROM: Amanda
RE: Go ahead...ask.
DATE: January 19, 2012

Can I get to know you better?

It's just 7 words. It's just one question. And it's the chorus to a song by one of my favorite 60s group The Turtles. It probably sounds crazy to you, boys, but this is the sexiest pick-up line if you ask me. The hands-down, blows-away-the-competition sexiest. When you think about it, is there really anything more genuine than simply asking someone if you can get to know them? There's something so innocently sexy about that question that would probably make me want to take my heart right off my sleeve and give it to you.

Maybe I'm so moved by this question because of the little fence I've noticed building up since Damn It Douche Bag Kyle. Granted, it's not a huge wall, but it nonetheless has made me a bit closed off at times, afraid to get close to anyone and even more afraid of getting hurt again. But this question? If you just came up to me, smiled and asked, "Can I get to know you better...?" Something tells me it would tear down that fence just a little bit, as if gently telling me that you're a good guy.

I'm not naïve. I know being vulnerable means taking a leap without knowing where you'll land or even if you're strapped to a parachute. But I'd rather take a leap in the hopes of discovering the real you than resigning myself with being content to hold a stranger's hand for the rest of my life.

Because when it comes down to it, boys, I want to get to know the real you too. I don't want to get to know some version you think I want to meet. I don't want to get to know you -- only you and all of you.

Think about it: What if we were to strip everything away, scratching and unwrapping layer after superficial layer away? What would we see? Would we even be able to recognize ourselves anymore?

So, go ahead and ask me, boys, if you can get to know me better. And what will I say in return?

"What do want to know?" xoxo

Friday the 13th, 2012!

Yikes, friends! Today is Friday the 13th.
How superstitious are you? Do you scare easily? What's the craziest superstition you've ever heard? Apparently, it's considered bad luck to keep goldfish in the house...who knew?!?!?
I'm quite the scaredy-cat -- pun intended! xoxo

btb... I'm actually having an amazing day so far. :]]

Postcard Cups.

Online shop Bailey Doesn't Bark offers something I've never seen before: Postcard Cups! All you do is write your message on the cup, let it dry for 24 hours and then bake it in the oven for 35 minutes...and voila! You've got a permanent message! I absolutely love this idea and want one. How cute would it be to get this from someone with a little message on it? What would you write on your cup, and who would you give it to?

xoxo

So, about those love bombs.

Romance and love is a funny thing, isn't it? Sometimes, it's so obvious that you have feelings for someone; it's as if the emotions can't leap out of your chest fast enough, and you find yourself tripping over your words. Then, other times, you find yourself in a minefield of confusion. Love bombs, as I call them, keep going off, but you don't know which ones are directed at you and which ones you're simply reading too much into.

I, obviously, tend to follow the second path, both hurling love bombs in the air and not knowing what to do with the ones that I find rolling toward my feet. I received this interesting comment in response to talking with a friend over some similar subject.

"Relationships are not like your college classes. You can't "study" for life experiences like dating."

Wouldn't it be great if love was like that? If there was some sort of manual to read, full of how-to guides and checklists for every situation you could possibly encounter. Even though the romantic side of me would hate it, the rational part of me would love a scientific, logical approach to dating.

I'd love a handy how-to guide for telling someone you like them - a list of possible things to say, perhaps. It would certainly squelch a lot of those butterflies. If you think about it, it sort of makes sense. There's no questioning how you feel about someone, and the person on the receiving end never has to wonder how you feel about them. Everything is out in the open. No pretense. No secrets. No hiding the truth, or even being afraid that your true feelings will seap through without your knowing. There's a certain sort of freedom with knowing that you don't have to hide how you feel, isn't there, boys? You don't have to worry about saying the wrong thing or about the other person judging you.

Wouldn't it be amazing if men and women were just honest with each other, if we shared our emotions openly and let someone know how we truly felt about them? Maybe we're all just making things more difficult than they need to be. I don't know about you, but there's always that person that makes you come undone. I'm excited for the day I can just blurt out, "I like you" to that someone. That's it. Just those 3 little words. It sums up exactly how I feel without any fancy speeches or beating around the bush. What do you think that would look like? What would you think if I actually did that? And really, what exactly are we afraid of?

So tell me, boy...how do I know if you like me? What's your go-to move for telling a girl you like her?
